What is covered on the HSPT?

The High School Proficiency Test(HSPT) is a standardized test used to measure a current 8th-grade student’s skills for placement into 9th grade at Catholic/parochial schools. The HSPT tests in the following areas: verbal skills, quantitative skills, reading comprehension, mathematics, and language. Additionally, as stated before, The HSPT is a standardized, timed test required of every 8th-grade student applying to attend a Catholic high school. The first two sections measure verbal and quantitative ability. The next three sections include questions related to reading comprehension, mathematics,
and the components of written language. The HSPT questions are designed to test students at their curriculum level.

How to Register

Students in 8th grade register to take the test at the private school to which they are applying, generally called an admissions test.

Parents looking to access more details about HSPT tutoring and test preparation services can find valuable information on the official HSPT website. Additionally, they can visit the HSPT Parent's Page to gain further insights into available resources, support, and guidance related to HSPT preparation. By exploring these online resources, parents can arm themselves with the necessary information to help their child prepare effectively for the HSPT.

Testing Dates

Schools offer the exam in the fall or winter prior to enrollment. It's important to check with the schools for their specific requirements and deadlines. Additionally, the HSPT is typically administered in January. Keep in mind that individual schools may have varying policies on accepting retake scores, so it is advisable to confirm their guidelines before planning to retake the exam.

Timing

The standard HSPT lasts just over 2½ hours

Scoring

When taking the HSPT, the number of correct answers is used to calculate the score. Each correct answer is worth one point, and there are no penalties for incorrect answers or unanswered questions. The raw score is then converted into a scaled score, which ranges from 200 to 800 for each section. This takes into account the difficulty level of the test version. The scaled scores from the five sections (Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Language) are added together to get the total score, which can range from 600 to 2400. This scoring process is an important aspect of the HSPT, and students should be aware of it when preparing for the test.

These scores play a crucial role in the evaluation process for schools. Once converted to the standardized scoring scale, ranging from 200 to 800, schools utilize these scores for various purposes such as admissions, determining academic placement, and awarding scholarships. The comprehensive nature of the scoring system ensures that students' performance across different sections is accurately reflected in their total score, which is instrumental in schools' decision-making processes.
