Testing Overview
The PSAT is a standardized test administered by schools as a preliminary SAT for sophomores and juniors in high school. The test scores are used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship. The scores are also used as an early indicator of a student’s likely score for the SAT. It is highly recommended that students take the PSAT so that they are aware of their academic standing on the SAT and are able to work on their scores early on.
How to Register
Students don't register for the PSAT through any external site. Schools and districts choose whether and when to offer it.
Testing Dates
The PSAT is offered on a primary test day, Saturday, and alternate test day. Check with your school or district for upcoming dates.
Timing
The PSAT takes 2 hours and 45 minutes.
What's Covered on Exam

Note: Most of the questions are multiple choice, though some math questions ask you to write in the answer rather than select it.
Scoring
The PSAT score ranges from 320 to 1520 and consists of two section scores: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math. Each section score ranges from 160 to 760. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score combines scores from the Reading and Writing and Language Tests, with each contributing equally to the section score.
PSAT scores are typically available online 4–6 weeks after the test administration.
