WHAT IS ON THE DIGITAL PSAT EXAM & WHEN IS IT GIVEN?
The PSAT/NMSQT consists of three sections:
- Evidence-Based Reading: This section evaluates your ability to understand and analyze passages from various sources.
- Writing and Language: It assesses your grammar, punctuation, and communication skills through written texts.
- Mathematics: This section tests your mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities in both calculator and no-calculator sections.
The digital PSAT is given between the months of October 2-30 th every school year. The exact format of the test is the following: The test is 2 hours and 14 minutes, and there are two sections on the exam: (1) Reading and Writing (2) Math. Each section is divided into two modules of equal length. The format of the digital PSAT is similar to the format of the digital SAT. The test starts with Module 1 of the reading and writing section. The students have 32 minutes to answer 27 questions. During this time, students can skip ahead or go back to any question within
Module 1, but they are not allowed to move on to Module 2 until the 32 minutes are up. Immediately after module 1, they move on to module 2 which has the same format. Then it’s the math section (2) which also has two modules. Each module has 22 questions and they get 35 minutes per module. The technology the student will need to have been a computer, or tablet that has the digital blue book app.
How do you register for the Digital PSAT?
Registering for the PSAT/NMSQT is usually done through your high school. The College Board provides registration materials to schools, and you can sign up through your guidance counselors or designated administrators. It’s important to register early to secure your spot and receive preparation materials to make the most of your study time. Usually, the registration will take place during the Fall term. The College-Board search tool identifies schools offering the PSAT. The PSAT is only offered on three dates in October every year. Each school sets its own registration policies, so be sure to check with your counselor.
What is the Scoring for the PSAT?
The PSAT/NMSQT is scored on a scale of 320 to 1520, with separate scores for each section:
- Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 160 to 760
- Mathematics: 160 to 760
Apart from section scores, students also receive a Selection Index score, which is used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. This program can provide significant financial aid and merit scholarship opportunities for college. Overall, about 50,000 students qualify for recognition each year. Ultimately about 15,000 will move on to the national
merit finalists. For more information on the National Merit Scholarship, please visit the link below:
