Testing Overview

The Scholastic Testing Service administers the HSPT (High School Placement Test), which is a thorough placement test that 8th graders take to gain admission to Catholic high schools. This test covers a wide range of topics and is specifically designed for students seeking admission to these schools. Students looking to take the HSPT should keep in mind that the test is typically administered in January. It is important to register for the test through the prospective high school, as each school administers the test individually. While the HSPT is a comprehensive exam, students are advised that not all schools may accept retake scores, so it is recommended to approach the test with thorough preparation and focus. Additionally, for students applying to multiple schools that accept the HSPT, there is the convenience of having their test scores sent to other schools for consideration.

How to Register

Students in 8th grade register to take the test at the private school to which they are applying, generally called an admissions test.

Parents looking to access more details about HSPT tutoring and test preparation services can find valuable information on the official HSPT website. Additionally, they can visit the HSPT Parent's Page to gain further insights into available resources, support, and guidance related to HSPT preparation. By exploring these online resources, parents can arm themselves with the necessary information to help their child prepare effectively for the HSPT.

Testing Dates

Schools offer the exam in the fall or winter prior to enrollment. It's important to check with the schools for their specific requirements and deadlines. Additionally, the HSPT is typically administered in January. Keep in mind that individual schools may have varying policies on accepting retake scores, so it is advisable to confirm their guidelines before planning to retake the exam.

The standard HSPT lasts just over 2½ hours

What's Covered on Exam

Note: Passage 1 provides a detailed insight into the structure of the HSPT test, shedding light on the various sections that encompass the exam. Within the test, students will encounter a total of 298 multiple-choice questions distributed across these different sections.

The HSPT also includes an optional section called the Catholic Religion section, which consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. This section is only included at the request of the school administering the exam, and is not required for all students. The length of the Catholic Religion section may vary depending on the school administering the exam.

This comprehensive breakdown equips students with a thorough understanding of the test structure, helping them prepare effectively for success on the HSPT.

When taking the HSPT, the number of correct answers is used to calculate the score. Each correct answer is worth one point, and there are no penalties for incorrect answers or unanswered questions. The raw score is then converted into a scaled score, which ranges from 200 to 800 for each section. This takes into account the difficulty level of the test version. The scaled scores from the five sections (Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Language) are added together to get the total score, which can range from 600 to 2400. This scoring process is an important aspect of the HSPT, and students should be aware of it when preparing for the test.

Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that percentile and stanine rankings may vary significantly depending on the comparison group used for evaluation. Comparisons are made not only against the national population but also the local Bay Area population. The local norm group is notably competitive and limited in size, leading to potential fluctuations in percentiles from one test to another. Understanding these variations in rankings based on different comparison groups is key to comprehending the comprehensive interpretation of HSPT scores.

These scores play a crucial role in the evaluation process for schools. Once converted to the standardized scoring scale, ranging from 200 to 800, schools utilize these scores for various purposes such as admissions, determining academic placement, and awarding scholarships. The comprehensive nature of the scoring system ensures that students' performance across different sections is accurately reflected in their total score, which is instrumental in schools' decision-making processes.

Schools That Require the HSPT

Several local schools in the area require the HSPT for admissions. Some of these schools include Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, Mercy High School in Burlingame and San Jose, Notre Dame High School in Belmont, Sacred Heart Prep High School in Atherton, Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, and Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley.
