Testing Overview
SSAT tutoring is a program designed to help students prepare for the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). The SSAT is an entrance exam that private elementary, middle, and high schools use to evaluate prospective students for admission. By taking part in SSAT tutoring, students can improve their chances of achieving a high score on the exam and enhancing their chances of gaining admission to the school of their choice.
Timing
How to Register
You register your child for the SSAT by creating an account on the SSAT website.
Testing Dates
The SSAT is administered seven times each year by the Secondary Schools Admissions Testing.
Timing
Total testing time for the Elementary Level exam is 2 hours and 5 minutes; testing time for Middle and Upper Level exams is 3 hours and 5 minutes.
What's Covered on Exam
Note:
The test is administered at three levels:
Elementary (for students currently in grades 3-4)
Middle (for students currently in grades 5-7)
Upper (for students currently in grades 8-11)
*Experimental (Middle and Upper Levels only)
Scoring
You earn one point (+1) for every correct answer, and you lose one-quarter of a point (-1/4 point) for each incorrect answer. Omitted answers have no effect (0 points) on your score.
If you can eliminate one or more incorrect answer choices, it is statistically advantageous to guess.
However, if you cannot eliminate any answer choices, it is recommended that you leave the question blank.
Note that the Elementary Level SSAT does not have a guessing penalty, so students should answer every question on this exam.
Your raw score is calculated by subtracting one-fourth of your incorrect answers from the number of correct answers.
Don't worry if you feel like you're at a disadvantage compared to students in other grades taking the same upper-level exam. The SSAT scores are scaled and reported in percentiles that only compare students within the same age and grade group.
The essay section of the SSAT is not scored, but it is provided to admission officers at the schools to which you're applying as a sample of your writing.
Scores are accepted by more than 600 schools. Schools that accept SSAT scores include independent unaffiliated private day and boarding schools, non-diocesan Catholic schools or Catholic schools operated by religious orders, and non-Catholic religious-affiliated schools.
