Testing Overview
The SAT is a standardized test high school students take before applying to colleges. A student’s SAT score, along with their GPA, AP Scores, and relevant extracurricular activities are important factors that colleges look at when determining a student’s eligibility for college. Each college has a specific minimum SAT score requirement. Some college programs are more competitive than others, therefore, it is crucial that students prepare rigorously in order to distinguish themselves when applying to colleges.
How to Register
You can register for the SAT exam on the CollegeBoard website.
Testing Dates
The SAT is administered several times throughout the year, typically on Saturdays. There are several SAT testing dates available in the academic year. You can click here for the most current upcoming dates.
Timing
The SAT exam consists of two versions:
No essay: The timing structure for the exam without the essay is 3 hours and 15 minutes, with an additional 20-minute "experimental section" given at the end of the test, which is not included in your score.
With an essay: The exam with the essay is slightly longer, lasting 4 hours and 7 minutes, with the same 20-minute experimental section at the end.
What's Covered on Exam
Note: The SAT includes an experimental section towards the exam's end, usually lasting 20 minutes and varying in placement based on the essay option choice. This section can mirror any of the test's main areas - reading, writing, math (with or without a calculator) - and serves to pilot new questions and formats. Scores from this section do not count towards the final score.
Approach the SAT's experimental section with focus yet avoid overstating its importance. Use your timing and knowledge to effectively manage this additional 20-minute segment. If you're well-prepared for the rest of the test, you should be able to handle this part too. Stay confident and don't let stress about this section affect you.
Scoring
Scores range from 400 to 1600, with 1600 being a perfect score. Students can take the SAT multiple times to improve their scores, and colleges typically consider the highest score achieved.
Scores are released on a schedule after each test date. Click here to see upcoming score release dates.
